This article applies to Windows computers.

Depending on the operating system you are using, there can be more than one way to tell if you are an administrator on the computer.
The first method applies to Windows XP, Windows Vista and Window 7 operating systems, while the second method applies only to Windows XP operating systems.


Method 1 (shows your account type)
Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems

  1. Click Start and then Control Panel.

  2. In the Control Panel, double-click User Accounts icon.

  3. Users will be displayed with the account type under their names.

Method 2
Windows XP operating systems only

  1. Right-click on the Start menu.

  2. You are an administrator on the PC if you see the menu item 'Open All Users' as shown below.

  3. You are NOT an administrator on the PC if you see only the menu item 'Open' as shown below.
