Knowledge Base » [566614] I should I do if I get a 'TAR.Z file' error?

Operating System: Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista
Product or Service: StudyPlace, GatherPlace, TutorPlace
Client Software: GP4
There are two known reasons that cause the TAR.Z error:

  1. The first reason is when the current user on the computer does not have administrator rights associated with their login on the PC or Mac.
If you are logged in with a non-administrator account, you generally will not be able to install the GatherPlace software so you'll need to get someone with administrator rights to login, download, and install the software. Check here to find out if you have administrator rights associated with your login or not.

  2. The second known reason you may get the TAR.Z error is when the GP4 file download is either incomplete or has become corrupted.
To correct the problem, close all browser windows, re-open the web browser, and try to download the GP4 application again.

Also see details below.

The full error message, which is associated with error number 1002, reads 'Could not uncompress TAR.Z file. The file seemed to be modified from the original.'

How to fix it
Closing all web browser windows and trying the download again usually corrects the problem.

In some cases the PC may need to be restarted or the browser cache may need to be cleared in order to get a complete download.

Remember that you must have administrator rights on the computer to download and install the program.
